Jack Newcastle grew up amidst the crumble and decay of 1970s New York. 'The vestiges of the bygone era were still there,' he says. 'The old hotels might have been converted into welfare housing, and the grand theatres had gone triple-x, but that didn't keep the ghosts of romance and sophistication from haunting me through broken windows.'
Not one to live completely in the past, however, he's always on the search for greatness in our time. 'I guess I'm just interested in people who get it right. People who aren't out to make a quick buck by serving up a dish of mediocrity and selling it to everyone once. The perfect cocktail, artists with soul, a sublime slice of key lime pie: as a writer and publisher, my intention is never to celebrate anything less than genius.'
He still lives in the city that used to be New York.
