Koop Kooper Goes Go-Go With Sounds of Seduction

One of the best little secrets retro Sydney has to offer is a gig called Sounds of Seduction by Jay Katz and wife Miss Death. From the moment you wander into Hermann's in Darlington, you know you’ve hit something special.

I recently paid a visit to the themed night Sounds of Seduction Goes Go-Go, and the first thing I noticed, besides the pounding sixties rythmn, is the inherant cool of the crowd that inhabits this quirky world: a mixture of sixties hepcats with porkpies, goths, and go-go dancing waifs.

Pulling up a chair at the bar and talking to some of the patrons of this world, I found one thing in common: a love of the obscure side of the era and the cinema that came out of that period. I also found that among this group there's a real focus on vintage clothing and vintage oddities on vinyl.

Sounds of Seduction     Now, those who know me as more of a late-fifties self-styled lounge lizard would expect that this kind of mid-sixties debauchery would not be my style. Well, I gotta tell ya, the Koopmeister found himself cutting a rug with the Mia Farrow waifs in no time at all. I do draw a line at love beads, however, and I don’t care that Sinatra wore them at one time.

For ten years, exotica institution Sounds of Seduction has been entertaining those who like their music with a sixties edge and a bit of bump an grind. Under the glow of lava lamps and the flickering images from the organisers' cult film collection, dancers gyrate to anything from oddball soundtrack records to live acts. It's this kind of dedication that push the hosts to amazing lengths to decorate each venue. As well as making costumes for her troupe of go-go dancers, Miss Death also builds themed sets that rival those of Cecil B. DeMille. Around all that hard work, the couple also manage to have a radio show.

The Naked City broadcasts every Saturday between ten a.m. and mid-day on public radio FBI (94.5) with Jay Katz, Miss Death, and Coffin Ed. Guests have included Jimmy ‘JJ’ Walker from Good Times, Jack Sargeant, Neil Hamburger, Diamanda Galas, Jim Rose and many more. It’s always an adrenalin charged look at the sari arced rite of Sydney!

Sounds of Seduction runs monthly. To listen to a live stream broadcast of The Naked Citygo to FBI.org Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. Sydney Local Time.
