Do They Still Mean a Thing
If They Ain't Got that Swing?

Nov. 24, 2007 - Sydney, Australia: Royal Crown Revue hit the town with an almighty thump last night, bringing their driving swing to a sold out house at the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills.

Royal Crown Revue     A slightly edgy Eddie Nichols was wearing a cream double-breasted suit with a black shirt and tie and the fans were surprised to see Eddie sporting a new do along with it. The black slicked-back hair was also noticably thicker to many and it appeared that Eddie had either taken a dose of Botox or had undergone the knife for a bit of LA style plastic surgery. Nevertheless, the band looked fresh and eager and were keen to embrace the fans., performing songs off the new e.p., El Toro.

This scribe is not too sure about the new sound on El Toro, and the crowd was generally surprised when Eddie sang the Neil Diamond classic Solitary Man. The e.p. is a lot lighter in sound then previous albums and, personally, I think it lacks the punch that one expects from RCR. From media reports this week in the Sydney Morning Herald, this is in line with the "new sound" of RCR, but with its success yet to be measured, this scribe's fear is that if they drift into something which is not true to the band, it will ultimately destroy them as they slip into an ordinary and soft version of what was once the greatest swing band on earth. Let's hope not.
